Creativity, Part II
In Part I I shared my thoughts about artists’ Creativity in general, the roller coaster it can be and the spark that can turn ordinary moments into extraordinary experiences.
In Part II we will review the various roles that creativity has in our lives as artists.
Contrary to a generalized view of this engine that moves so many of us day in and day out, one can specify creativity’s various roles and functions.
- Expression of Individuality – Artists who seek their true expression and authenticity are supported in their endeavors by this muse whose predilection is honesty and truthfulness. She helps them to communicate their unique perspectives, thoughts and emotions in a way that resonates deeply with others. What comes from the heart cannot but go to the heart.
2. Innovation and Originality – Artists constantly push boundaries, exploring
new
ideas and developing work that challenges conventional norms. This is a
crucial element in Creativity as it keeps the art world vibrant and evolving.
3. Problem-Solving – Artists create problems they then must solve. A search
for authenticity, for a specific expression of a though or an emotion will,
perforce, create a challenge, a dare that the artist must meet and solve. This
search enables artists to find novel solutions and overcome obstacles, turning
challenges into opportunities for growth
4. Cultural Impact – Artists have the power to influence culture and society,
hence their being seen as “dangerous” to repressive societies. Art can spark
important conversations, inspire change and reflect the social and political
climates of its time.
5. Economic Value – Creativity also has significant economic implications.
Effectively harnessed creativity can create works that are not only impactful
but also marketable. Art can turn creative ideas into valuable products which
can lead artists to success and sustainability in their careers. Much can be
said about the state of the art in our current economy but this is not the
place nor the time for this discussion.

6. Adaptation and Growth – We artists are in a flow of constant evolution. We
adapt to changing circumstances and continuous growth in our craft.
Creativity encourages risk-taking, experimentation, exploration – all elements
that keep our work fresh and exciting.
Other characteristics of Creativity are: Discipline, Curiosity, Sensitivity, Perseverance, Open-mindedness, Passion and Resilience.
